Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

Gynecologic surgery is becoming a rapidly evolving field thanks in part to the advances of technology in surgical equipments.  Traditional methods of gynecologic surgery involve the use of scissors, scalpels and heavy metal retractors through large abdominal or vaginal incisions.  Internal organs are often retracted from their anatomic location with large metal devices, externalized from the abdomen, and exposed to room air.  Consequently, patients have to endure significant blood loss, pain, infection, and scarring.  Hospital stay usually lasts for several days and recovery as well as time out from work could take one to several months.

Advances in technology over the last ten years have significantly altered how we perform gynecologic surgery today.  The use of the laparoscope, for example, allows us to operate with a significantly magnified view of the internal organs.  Surgical equipments such as lasers and harmonic scalpels allow us to operate through incisions the size of a finger width.  The technology allows us to visualize in detail and delicately manipulate small organs such as arteries and veins thus reducing tissue damage and blood loss.

Surgery time, anesthesia time, blood loss, and infection rate are all significantly reduced.  Cosmetically three small finger width cut is much more appealing than the traditional large abdominal or vaginal incisions.   Postoperative pain from these small incisions is significantly less and can be easily managed with oral analgesic rather than intravenous narcotics.  Moreover, the risks of wound separation, wound infection or hernias are rare to non-existent.  Patients typically go home a few hours after their surgery.  And, time out from work is usually one to two weeks.

In partnership with the Sugar Land Surgical Hospital, we are the leading center in the Sugar Land/ Southwest Houston area to offer this type of service.  Click the links below for information on a few of the procedures available.
