Varicose Veins in Pregnancy
Pressure from the growing uterus and hormonal alteration in pregnancy will cause telengiectasia to form and varicose veins to swell. They appear most often in the legs but can occur anywhere especially near the rectum, vulva, and vagina. This condition is often worsened for patients who must stand or sit for a long period of time. They are usually not serious, but can be very uncomfortable and unsightly. Unfortunately, methods for treatment of this condition including sclerotherapy, intense pulse light, or laser are relatively contraindicated. While these modalities are probably safe, there are insufficient studies to support the safety of these procedures in pregnancy. Given the paucity of test subjects and investigators on this issue, there will never be sufficient data. The good news is that the vast majority of these conditions are self limiting and will resolve with delivery. For some relief:
